"Episode 9 – The Return of the Hierarchical Empire"

Speaker: Ulf Heinrich, Director of Solutions Delivery - SEGUS Inc, Chantilly, VA

This session covers the integration of XML in DB2 for z/OS V9 which has been called the revenge of IMS. There is some truth in this since XML is a hierarchical structure which is now integrated into a relational model. This now brings up a few interesting questions such as:

• How do we access the data in XML structures?
• What about indexing to improve performance?
• Are there recommendations for database design?

The presentation will highlight experiences with XML integration in DB2 for z/OS. Additionally, we will provide hints and tips on how to improve performance. Lastly, but not least, you will see why you should recall hierarchical "thinking modes" to survive in the new fashionable XML world

Speaker Biography: Ulf Heinrich specializes in finding answers to DB2 performance management and maintenance questions, focusing on 24x7 operations and cost reduction. While consulting at large customer sites, where he implemented database maintenance procedures and recovery strategies, Ulf also experienced first-hand the pitfalls of recovery scenarios under real world pressure. He is well known as a speaker in the DB2 community.

"Ten Principles of Highly Effective DBAs"

Speaker: Robert Goodman – Florida Hospital

This session covers how database administration is all about doing more with less. We are constantly asked to expand the role and scope of DBA responsibilities without additional resources. Learn the foundation principles that are the underpinning of highly effective DBAs and how you can use them to transform your job. You are invited on a database journey to explore some practical ways these principles have been put into practice in the largest hospital in the United States.

Speaker Biography: Bob Goodman has been in data processing since 1977 and is the Senior DBA and DR Coordinator at Florida Hospital. He has been involved with DB2 since version 1.2 and has been active the in the DB2 arena since 1987. Since that time, Bob has been involved in all aspects of DB2 on z/OS in a true 24x7 high availability environment for the largest hospital in the US. He has conducted extensive technical training for hospital IT staff and frequently presents at database user groups. He is a veteran IDUG and IOD speaker and is a member of the IDUG Speaker Hall of Fame.

"Integrating Mainframe Data at the Speed of Your Business"

Speaker: Scott Hagan, Senior Product Manager, INFORMATICA PowerExchange

This session will be covering:

  • What keeps you awake and distracted.

  • Challenges, solutions and benefits faced by mainframe organizations.

  • Why even do Real Time Data Integration?

  • How are customers addressing the issues and things to look out for in Integration of Mainframe Data to fit the speed of your business

02:00 - 03:00

"Development in a Virtualized Production Environment"

Speaker: Ulf Heinrich, Director of Solutions Delivery - SEGUS Inc, Chantilly, VA

This session will cover next-generation technology that enables solutions reaching far beyond well-known application development and testing.

  • Learn how to ensure proactive access path control for static and dynamic SQL. Trustworthy access path visualization not only shows when performance changes, but also how, why, and what it changes to. Environment simulation allows exact access path simulation on another machine showing what will happen if you switch hardware or use different configurations for CPU, I/O, or memory.

  • Create virtual indexes and see the results.

  • Detect and understand Optimizer choices that originate from the environment and avoid any more unforeseen application behavior when moving a new release to production.

These capabilities introduce a whole new world of "what if" opportunities and especially protect you from testing that doesn’t focus on what counts: the resulting performance in your production environment

03:00 - 03:10

Break

03:10 - 04:10

"Using DB2’s Time Machine to Convert to Temporal Data Can Be Easy, Really"

Speaker: Bob Goodman – Florida Hospital

DB2 10’s time machine provides a comprehensive set of powerful tools to create and manage temporal data.

  • But how can you convert operational systems into temporal without making sweeping changes?

This presentation will show you one technique to convert operational data into temporal data without the need for the overhaul of production data structures, programs and processes.

  • Learn how to get the benefits of temporal data with minimal effort by morphing processes already found in most data warehouses.

  • Come and learn how you can unleash the power of DB2’s time machine and bring your warehouse to a whole new level.
